An additional option to engage and inspire students

We're pleased to confirm that our Edexcel Level 1/2 Certificate in English Language will count in the performance measures (five A*-C including English and maths and the English Baccalaureate) in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The Edexcel Level 1/2 Certificate in English Literature will also count in school performance tables in 2013, 2014, and 2015, and, as such, will not be viewed as non-GCSE qualifications in the performance table rules.

See a list of qualifications that count in the EBacc here.

As with GCSE, students must take both the Certificate in English Language and the Certificate/GCSE in English Literature and achieve at least a grade C in English Language. This is to ensure that anyone achieving the Level 2 threshold has studied the whole English curriculum. With the inclusion of the new English Certificates, you also have choices to offer:

  • Certificate in English Language with GCSE English Literature
  • GCSE English language with Certificate in English Literature.

This information will be updated each year upon publication of the Key Stage 4 performance tables. For more information about this, see our Edexcel Certificate FAQs.

expand Which of my students is the Certificate suitable for?

The Certificate gives you the freedom to plan your curriculum to suit each and every one of your students.

• Mixed ability groups will benefit from the variety of set texts. There's no tiering in the Certificates, so you and your department can personalise the content and skills of your curriculum to your students to stretch the more able and support lower ability students.

• Higher ability students will be stretched by the choice of set texts, and you have the opportunity to provide a varied curriculum

• Lower ability students will benefit from the additional time in the curriculum to discover the texts, and are assessed through structured, multi-part questions.
expand Key features of The Edexcel Certificate

  • There's no controlled assessment. The Certificate is 100% externally assessed for English Literature, and 90% externally assessed for English Language. Your centre only marks the Speaking and Listening component (10%), with assessment similar to GCSE. No controlled assessment means you have greater freedom in the curriculum to personalise the content and skills to your students.

  • There's no tiering, which makes student entry more straightforward. The exam papers contain both short- and long-answer questions.

  • Assessment windows are available in January and June, so you can choose whichever best suits your students.

  • A free Anthology includes all the set texts available for study across Language and Literature. It contains many familiar texts so you can make the transition from GCSE to Certificate easily.
