Nathan Whiteley
BTEC Level 3 IT Practitioners (Software Development)

Nathan is an enthusiastic, intelligent and motivated undergraduate at Leeds University, studying a BSc in Information Technology. Before his life at university, Nathan studied a BTEC Level 3 IT Practitioners course. He believes this prepared him well for university life and study. Not only did he settle in quickly, he also found that much of the academic content covered on the BTEC was found in the first year of his degree.

As Nathan has always had a set career in mind, choosing a BTEC that followed this specific route made sense. “I wanted a course that concentrated on software development, rather than just IT. The BTEC gave me practical, in-depth experience in this area which is exactly what I wanted”.

It wasn’t just the in-depth learning that Nathan found beneficial. The BTEC course structure and approach helped him develop a range of useful transferable skills that he has been able to apply at university and in his part time work. “I liked the syllabus structure of the BTEC. A lot of the course is task-based, so I always knew what was coming next. The course also helped my social and leadership skills. I met so many people and worked a lot as a team with staff and students. The whole experience was really nurturing”.

The skills Nathan talks of are clearly evident when you meet him. It’s no surprise that he progressed to university so easily, or that he recently picked up the prestigious title of IT Student of the Year from the Royal Society of Arts
